Extremely dissapointed and up to my eye balls in debt

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I graduated from DeVry in December 2017. I earned my bachelors of science in computer information systems with a cumulative GPA 3.86. I did the entire course online. So far, I have been on several interviews and all have said that I am not sufficiently trained or there is too much of a deficit in my level of skill to perform the entry level job. The jobs applied for are entry level software developer, database admin, among others my degree states I am prepped for. I finally gave up and went back to seeking employment in my old industry (construction). The reason I chose DeVry was their outstanding job placement stats, 88% of people who go through their program obtain a job in their field 6 months after graduation. In life I believe hard work and perseverance are the keys to successful goal accomplishment. However, in this case I feel I got duped by a university that over promised and under delivered. I did my part and graduated with honors, however, all I received in return is $60,000 dollars in student load debt and nothing to show for it except for a diploma in a nice case. The worst part about it is DeVry representatives dodge responsibility by turning the tables and placing blame on the graduate for the lack of employment success. My advice do not, I repeat do not, consider Devry as a means to an end in your pursuit of gainful employment you may be extremely disappointed.

Devry University - Education Degree Review from Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Updated by user May 18, 2016

Technology Management is my degree but I could never get a clear explanation of what I was studying for and once I graduate what could I say was my specialty. I was eventually told that they did not have a specific program for the program I was seeking and this was an allaround computer degree.

With that explanation I was too embarrassed to explain this to anyone. One time I was talking to a relative and the subject came up and I confided in her what I was told. And she replied yell I have heard of that. I do not know if she felt sorry for me but we changed the subject.

I never discussed it with anyone else but my brother. I was too embarrassed to brag on the job that I was in school because I never felt I had anything to show for it. Eventually when I was told that I was in my program and had a few more classes to go, I know that sounds like maybe I should have been keeping up with my classes as well. Well back then trying figure out where I was in my program, what class was next, and what I had left was like a needle in a hay stack.

It has improved but it is still very confusing. With very little explanation of the classes and a lot of the description for all classes is very general. It always left me scratching my head. Now we are talking grad school.

That is when I thought what do you mean I’m in my program I know nothing about databases to walk into an establishment and request to be considered for a database position. All that I know about a database is what I read about and what I was taught on the job.

DeVry University and Keller Graduate School are on the esteem list of institution/agency as recognized and accredited by US. Department of Education. AccreditedSchoolsList@***.net.

Nationally recognized accrediting agencies - National accrediting agencies are recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education as reliable authorities concerning the quality of education or training offered by the institutions of higher education they accredit. These agencies accredit single-purpose institutions.

DVU and Keller falsely advertised the graduates were achieving gainful employment and a competitive education. They are also doing business as an unethical business institution.

Waste of time

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
My time of getting my BS at devry is complete bs, the time I wasted there I could have been working or remained in the navy. The loss of money, work skills, and this BS degree have not helped me get a job, only hurt it. Was a waste of four years of my life, now I am so low I applied to fast food places because I turn down a good job cause I thought college would help me. I was wrong, do your self favor and go to a trade school or even flip burgers because the bs does not stand for bachelors of science it stands for bull *** Two years later, a 3 page resume, no job, can't receive help from the goverment(food stamps, unemployment), a 137 IQ and I do the work of a illegal Mexican. Thanks devry for your wonderful help in screwing up my life.

Devry University Justice Administration Review from Hearne, Texas

Devry University has used 57,500 of federal and state financial aid funds that was granted to me for my undergraduate program Justice Administration. Six months before it's time for me to finish the financial aid "consultants" inform that all of my financial aid has been used and they put holds on my registration where I can't finish this program in order to earn my Bachelor's Degree.

The people in financial aid literally told me that I no other recourse unless I had some cash to pay them.

If I had cash to pay for my continued education I would not need federal funds. These people are not concerned about the enrolled students who are sincerely working on making a better life for themselves, they are only interested in the dollar bills that's being awarded.

PLEASE READ BEFORE CONSIDERING DEVRY AS YOUR SCHOOL FOR EDUCATION

DeVry University - PLEASE READ BEFORE CONSIDERING DEVRY AS YOUR SCHOOL FOR EDUCATION - Image 4

YESTERDAY I DECIDED TO QUIT DEVRY AFTER 2 1/2 YRS. THE FOLLOWING REASONS WHY I MADE THIS DECISION ARE:

FIRST. I SHOULD HAVE DONE MY HOMEWORK ON DEVRY BUT I DID NOT KNOW ANYONE WHO ATTENDED THE SCHOOL FOR ADVICE SO I PARTIALLY BLAME MYSELF. THE ONLY GUIDANCE I HAD WAS FROM THE ADMISSION ADVISORS. WHEN YOU GO TO ORIENTATION THE SCHOOL INFORMS STUDENTS HOW GREAT SOME BENEFITS ARE AT DEVRY. FOR EXAMPLE: TUTORING AND SOME SOFTWARE PRODUCTS ARE AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS FOR FREE AND THAT’S SOMETHING YOU CANT GET AT A COMMUNITY COLLEGE WHERE THEY CHARGE YOU. WELL BIG DEAL, SAY YOU SUCK AT MATH AND TUTORING IS ABOUT $100 PER SESSION. YOU KNOW WHAT, SAYS ITS $200 PER SESSION. YOU STILL ARE GOING TO BE SAVING MONEY IF YOU TAKE CLASSES AT A COMMUNITY COLLEGE OPPOSE TO DEVRY.

THE FIRST RED FLAG I NOTICED ABOUT DEVRY ARE THE PROFESSORS. MOST PROFESSORS ARE GREAT BUT THEY HAVE TO TEACH BY THE BOOK. CLASSES ARE ONLY EIGHT WEEKS LONG RATHER THAN 15-18 WEEKS AT A COMMUNITY/MAJOR UNIVERSITY. SO PROFESSORS ARE RUSHING YOU TO COMPLETE YOUR COURSE.

FOR EXAMPLE I HAD A PROFESSOR IN A MATH CLASS THAT WOULD JUST SIT AROUND AND LET STUDENTS WORK ON THEIR MATH PROBLEMS OVER SOME COMPUTER SOFTWARE AND IF YOU NEEDED HELP THE PROFESSOR WOULD GO AROUND AND HELP THE STUDENT WITH A PROBLEM OR PROBLEM(S). WELL, WHEN YOU HAVE ABOUT 20-25 STUDENTS IN ONE CLASS AND MOST OF THE TIME HALF NEEDS HELP, FOUR HOURS GO BY FAST. AND WHEN IT’S TIME TO GO, SO IS THE PROFESSOR. SHE WOULDNT ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS AFTER CLASS. SHE WOULD SAY "CLASS IS OVER AND I HAVE TO GO".

THE SECOND RED FLAG CAME WHEN YOU PROFESSORS AT DEVRY INFORMING THEIR OWN STUDENTS "IT DOESNT MAKE SENSE TAKING THEIR CLASS BECAUSE YOU CAN TAKE THE SAME CLASS AT A COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOR THE SAME CREDIT" SOMETHING IS WRONG! I FINALLY DUMMIED UP AFTER 2 1/2 YEARS. IT MAKES NO SENSE GOING TO DEVRY AND PAYING OVER $600 PER CREDIT WHEN YOU CAN PAY BETWEEN $50-60 PER CREDIT AT A COMMUNITY COLLEGE THAT CAN TRANSFERRED TO A UNIVERSITY. SO WHY IN THE WORLD PAY OVER $2500.00 FOR A FREAKIN FRESHMEN ENGLISH COURSE WHEN YOU CAN PAY $200-$250 FOR AT A COMMUNITY COLLEGE.

THE THIRD FLAG WAS YOU HAVE TO GO BY DEVRY'S SCHEDULE. SAY FOR EXAMPLE YOU WANT TO TAKE ALL YOUR BASIC COURSES AT A COMMUNITY COLLEGE..MAKES SENSE RIGHT? WELL ONE OF YOUR MAJOR COURSES IS NOT AVAILABLE JANUARY BUT IT’S AVAILABLE IN MARCH. FOR FINANCIAL AID TO PAY FOR COURSES THEY NEED TO BE TAKEN BOTH JAN, AND MAR.THEREFORE TAKING MONEY OUT OF YOUR FINANCIAL AID RATHER THAN SAVING.

THE FOURTH FLAG ARE THE STUDENT SUCCESS COACHES. WHEN YOU START AT DEVRY YOU ARE SET UP WITH A SUCCESS COACH THAT ADVISES YOU ABOUT YOUR FINANCIAL AID,CLASSES NEEDING TO BE TAKEN AND WHICH PATH TO GO WITH, ETC. YOU WOULD THINK YOU WOULD ONLY HAVE ONE SUCCESS COACH TO BE FAMILIAR AND COMFORTABLE WITH AND GUIDE YOU IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. THE 2 1/2 YEARS I'VE BEEN THERE I LOST COUNT HOW MANY SUCCESS COACHES I HAD AND WHEN ONE COACH ADVISES ME ABOUT ONE THING, ANOTHER COACH WOULD TELL ME SOMETHING TOTALLY DIFFERENT CAUSING ALOT OF CONFUSION.

OVERALL, I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND DEVRY UNIVERSITY OR ANY FOR PROFIT SCHOOLS SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY HOG YOUR FINANCIAL AID. SIMPLE AS THAT.

MY ADVICE:

BE PATIENT. WHAT I MEAN BY THAT IS BE FAMILIAR WITH YOUR COURSES. DO NOT RUSH TO GRADUATE LIKE DEVRY OFFERS. TAKE THE 15-18 WEEK COURSES. I COULD CARE LESS IF YOU ARE RIGHT OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL OR AN ADULT WITH A FAMILY BECAUSE I GUARANTEE YOU. IT’S GOING TO HELP IN THE LONG RUN.

YOU HAVE TO ASK YOURSELF, WOULD YOU RATHER PAY APPROX $2500 FOR AN ASSOCIATES DEGREE OR $30-40K FOR AN ASSOCIATES DEGREE AT DEVRY?

WOULD YOU PAY $18-30K FOR A BACHELORS DEGREE AT A UNIVERSITY OR $60-80K PLUS FOR A BACHELORS AT DEVRY? BY THE WAY, THE MAX YOU CAN BORROW FROM THE GOVT IS UNDER 60K SO IF YOU NEED MORE MONEY TO PAY CLASSES, I WAS ADVISED TO SIGN UP FOR SCHOLARSHIPS AND STUDENT LOANS FROM A BANK CAUSING YOU MORE DEBT. GREAT ADVICE FROM MY SUCCESS COACH, HUH?

AS FOR ME, IM ALMOST 30K IN DEBT AND I ONLY TOOK ONE MAJOR COURSE WITH 19 MORE COURSES LEFT. SO YOU DO THE MATH. THERE WAS NO WAY I COULD HAVE MADE IT. I REALLY HOPE THIS HELPS YOU GUYS AND I WISH YOU THE BEST.

GOOD LUCK!

These kinds of universities have a horrible reputation of being degree mills, and targeting people who quite frankly are too *** to get into a state university. Even if the class is challenging and on par with a standard university, the reputation of these universities is so tarnished that most resumes tend to go in the trash upon seeing the name of these kinds of universities.

For those thinking about going to one of these universities, your best bet it is to go to a community college. From there, you can decide if you want to jump to a 4 year university/college.

These institutions most of the time are significantly more expensive than a regular in state institution. Moreover, you do not want to roll the dice on whether a future employer will actually take your resume serious.

I went to DeVry 25 years ago and so did 2 of my co-workers. I went to CA and they went to AZ.

I can't say everything was how I wanted it but it did seem to prep me for many of the jobs I've had over the last 25 years. The two co-workers are some of the hardest working guys I've ever had working for me.

I think you are too focused on the things you don't like. After 2 1/2 years, you should be about to graduate. Why would you quit now?

Most educations are what you make of them. I had many good teachers and a few bad ones. I worked really hard to graduate and really struggled at the end but I was determined to finish and I did.

I owe my 6 figure salary to the education I received at DeVry and so do my 2 co-workers.

Dear Sir or Ma'am,

I am the one that made the initial post about DeVry.

First of all, I would like to commend you on your success at DeVry.

Now, let me get into a little more detail with my situation.

I am on my own. I do not have any support from my parents. You are right. You would think 2 1/2 years into a program I should be almost graduating but when you work 12 hours and have an employer that does not support you attending classes at night during working hours, it is very challenging because DeVry is set for working adults and classes are mostly at night.

But they forgot about the workers who work nights. So I could only afford to take one class per session.

For you to say you believe I am too focused on the things I do not like; what more proof do you need? I believe you are missing my point.

I'm sure alot has change at DeVry since 1988/89. I'm sure you had alot of lectures in the classroom. These days, 85-90% maybe more of the classes are computer based. Lectures are crucial.

Especially when you get to your major courses. Professors would inform you to go home and read the lectures over a computer software and if you have any questions to email the professor.

Overall, my point is you mentioned about you making a six figure salary from graduating DeVry.

I guarantee you 10 years from now, I or anyone else will be making that same figure income by finishing my or their education at a school that is "not" at a DeVry University and will be saving thousands of dollars in financial aid.

@HappyDeVryGrad, your six digit salary would only have gotten u 25 credits at $4000/4 credits. Thats extremely expensive for an online college.

Yes, you probably do owe DeVry your salary. But in the end, whats good for one is not always good for others.(especially after reading the small print).

LOL!!! We don't actually go to your school which means we have common sense and know immediately that you either work for the school or was paid to leave a positive remark.

These schools pull this *** across the board.

I like when you really tried to over sale it claiming you make a 6 figure salary, that part was so hilarious, I almost p*ssed myself from laughing. Thanks for the laugh!

Yes, degree mills try to create a fake reputation by all means possible, and retarded dimwits complain to anyone who will listen. It's the circle of life in academia.

Amen! I wish my DeVry math class lasted a whole four hours.

My class was supposed to be four hours but never lasted longer than a half hour! It would consist of the professor asking if anyone had questions on last week's homework, then assigning new homework and dismissing class.

When I asked for some instruction, I was told to get a tutor! There are a thousand more things I could get into but it's going to make me angry all over again!

All I can say is. The only way for you to be familiar with your courses.

(Especially something like Math)

Take them at a community college. Rather than being rushed to complete the program in eight weeks. You can have 15-18 weeks. Trust me.

Its less of a headache than taking courses at DeVry anyway.

And to top it off. Its cheaper!

Bachelor and Masters Degree from DeVry/Keller Graduate School of Managment

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I started DeVry in 2007. I attended the undergrad program for 1 year. I transferred in a a lot credits from a community college, so I was able to finish up at DeVry in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Technical Managment. That one year of attendance cost me $24,687.00. I attended the graduate school from 2008 to 2011. I was able to obtain a Master of Science Degree in Human Resource Managment. That degree cost me $118, 391.00. I was not able to find a job in either field. I ended up having to go back to school to get my teaching degree in order to get a teaching job. I was pleased with the teachers at DeVry and Keller, but they sold me on getting a job when you graduate so I thought they were a legitimate school. I have $143,078.00 in student loans thanks to DeVry's expensive tuition. I am a the max with loans and no job in the field to pay them back as DeVry promises a great paying job to his graduates when they finish the program. Two degrees that mean nothing. A pure waste of time.

I understand that there is a lawsuit against DeVry University; can someone confirm this information? I attended 2008 through 2012 when I graduated.

Since then, I am not making what I should be and I agree with several others....it was a waste of time and money. That piece of paper does not mean anything.

I have over 25 years experience but was pushed to get a degree to prove I knew what I was doing. Now I am 72,000.00 in debt and can't find a descent paying job.

GI Bill Theft and Fraud

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

I attended DeVry University during my active duty. I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in 2013.

I now attend Keller Graduate School of Management for my MBA. I have had nothing but problems. I have already filed a complaint to VA as well as spoke to numerous Finance personnel and a Team Leader. I was told numerous times different conflicting information.

I have also filed a complaint with Consumer Affairs as well as the Department of Education Office of Inspector General. Let me explain my situation and how I feel I have been discriminated against as a Disabled Veteran of the United States Air Force. First the school charged me for a class I should have never had to take. I attended 2 classes in March 2014.

The Econ class I, which I completed and passed. The statistics class I got overwhelmed in and withdrew to take later. I was sent a notification by VA in May of 2014 that the Economics class was a transfer credit and I had to pay it back. Well Keller failed to mention to me that I got transfer credit for it so they sent me letters of debt and I contacted the VA and Keller.

It took me until October 2014 to get this debt resolved. If I had not fought this issue I would have had to pay your school double for a class that I took based on incorrect information from Keller. Keller ended up taking credit for it and using Yellow Ribbon and some other grant to pay the money back to VA. Which is wrong and they should have paid it.

The second issue is that I was being charged for the Statistics class by Keller despite VA already paying the bill. I know this because if VA had taken the charge back I would have owed for BAH which I have not. I finally got that issue sorted out after filing a complaint with the VA GI Bill compliance Team and they sent the complaint to Devry. Why you would get to investigate your own complaint is a very big question.

The biggest issue I have had is that I received a D+ in 1 class a C+ in another and the rest are high A's and B's. It was because of these grades I apparently dropped to below a 3.0 GPA. Here in lies the discrimination. Why I am being held to a different standard than other students.

Why do I have to maintain a different GPA because of my financial aid? Not to mention why I am being punished for something that I did not fail nor get an incomplete. The punishment does not fit the crime. Apparently schools have the right to cancel a Veterans GI Bill if you drop below a 3.0.

Since November 2014 because I got a low grade in one class I have had to use Federal Loans to pay for my school and I am out my BAH and GI Bill completely. Keller said that I had a 2.99 and they placed me on Academic Probation. I have since November 2014 got nothing less than a B+ but that is not good enough. I have to stay on academic probation until the end of August.

At that point I do not get back paid for anything and in order to get the rest of my hard earned GI Bill I have to attend another college. I feel like VA has put too much control in the For Profit Schools where they control part of my financial outcome. I have been put in massive debt and been stolen benefits from all due to 1 minor mistake which I have corrected. I feel like I have been misled, stolen from, discriminated against and taken advantage of due to having a full ride to school by the GI Bill.

However it seems it is more work for a school to use the VA so they do anything they can to get a student to use federal loans which allow them to perform less work and still make money. I feel I have been deprived of my hard earned benefits and stolen from and put in massive debt for no reason. VA has washed their hands of my issues because according to them Universities have the right to do this. How does Keller and or any other For Profit School have the right to control somebody else's benefits and money when all they are doing is taken advantage of the system.

Nobody is monitoring them because they all benefit from it. I want nothing more than the money and benefits that I earned being an Honorable Disabled Veteran. I attended college like I was supposed to so what gives Keller the right to suspend my money and then turn around and charge me long term debt and loans. I know I am not the only one that Keller and or DeVry have taken advantage of.

Three strikes of taking advantage of me and if I had not been aware of the situation I would have paid money back to a school that already benefited from payment and profits. The only right to this wrong is for you to authorize Keller to Back Certify my classes that I have been deprived of all because of 1 minor mistake which still allows me to graduate. The rule of a 3.0 GPA is discriminating against Veterans and people that have benefits instead of having to use federal loans. I simply want the money that I earned defending this country no more, no less.

I do not want to have to be in school for another year so that I can get something that is not going to benefit me but make profits for a University. I graduate from Keller Graduate School of Management in 2 classes. I work full time and support my family. I should not have to return to school in order to get my earned benefits which has been stolen from me.

Devry university has abused their power over a Veterans finances and hard earned benefits.

Why do they get to control my benefits which I earned by defending our Freedom. I worked hard for those benefits so why does a For Profit school get to control it.

Shoplifting is considered a crime of dishonesty in USA. With the growing use of background checks, this has the potential to impact employment opportunities, especially in security-sensitive sectors.

DeVry took my money and because I could not apply for any loans they dismissed me from school. They said it was because of my grades. No warning was given to me and what really made me more upset is I only had two more classes to graduate. DeVry will never get another penny out of me thats fir sure.

Devry University Student Loan Review from Glendale, California

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I attended DeVry University from 2009/ 2011, took out student loans that were held on to for months, because my debt balance was being covered by VOC-REHAB Veterans program. When the next semester started instead of dispersing funds, they applied funds to the post debt. This went on until they put a hold on my account to register, which they conveniently sign me up.for a private student loan through the school, which has been adding interested ECSI. Upon follow up I been told that my Veterans Voc-Rehab check was sent back to the V.A. depth v.s. applying it towards the balance or dispersing it to me to cover my debt.

Why did i get myself in to this?

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
After giving birth to my first child i decided it was time to go to school! I am the first in my family to attend college so i had no one to give me advice since no one had been through it and i had no one there to notice the scam that DeVry really is. I spoke with an adviser and ended up going with an associated degree in Health Information Technology. First off, during the interview and consult when we were trying to figure out which degree would best fit me i made it very clear i needed something that would pay off. Other wise, i would go be a teacher and do what i would love. So, he assures me that this is a growing career and it makes very good money and i listened to him. I got signed up and was very excited to be in college. Now, i chose to do it all online since i was a brand new mommy, a stay at home mommy, that is what best fit me. I start my classes and with financial aid and what happens? The IT lab doesn't work with my computer! I called technical support several times and we couldn't find the issue and there i was, failing my class because i was unable to access the work, much less complete it. I tried more and more to get the IT lab fixed with tech support and had no luck and my professor was never available to speak on the phone with me. Around week 4 i called up to the school again and said "this isn't working, i'm going to have to drop this class." They sat there and made me feel bad about it trying to convince me to keep trying so i did. A week later nothing had been resolved so i called again with my mind made up, i was going to drop the class. Too Late! My financial aid had already been charged and they can't refund it and i have to pay to take it again?! Oh, and purchase a new computer! Well, i did it. I kept going and for a year i studied hard and paid harder. I called up to financial aid so many times and was told so many different things. One person said to take this many credits and i wouldnt have an out of pocket fee and then i call back to double check around the time that the billing is done and they tell me i will have an out of pocket of 1,400! So i asked what i could do and they said if i dropped below 12 credit hours i wouldn't have an out of pocket but i would lose my scholarship because i went below full time. BUT, they said that i had a one time thing with the scholarship so i could get it back later. So, i call again when the time comes to get the scholarship back and they tell me i can't get it back! I'm furious! A few months go by and I am trying to afford college with out a scholarship so i take out ANOTHER loan. I start algebra and am at the point where i don't want to even try with this school anymore. I start looking up the average salary for the career i chose and it's less than a school teacher!! Then i find out i could actually get a job in this field with just my diploma! I called and said i wanted to transfer but i guess they don't transfer to other colleges so i would have to start all over again, so i bring up dropping out since community college is a third of the price. They then tell me that if i drop out i will be responsible for my entire tuition for a semester i haven't even started yet! So now i am stuck in this *** school on my last nerve and my last dollar.
